“Our students turned their school into hope.”

Biography

Mavis is a teacher who played a crucial role during the flood when her school was converted into a temporary shelter for displaced residents. She offers insight into the intersection of education and humanitarian response.

Before the flood

She was teaching at St. Kizito and part of the administrative team with access to school facilities.

During the flood

When the floodwaters reached Mepe, the school became a safe shelter for many families. Sanitation quickly became a problem. The Volta River Authority (VRA) later provided some mobile toilets, but the pressure on facilities was immense.

After the flood

When students returned, much of the school’s furniture and infrastructure was damaged. Cleaning and disinfection took weeks, supported by Zoomlion and community volunteers.

Thought's about the future

She believes teacher housing near schools would prevent similar crises and warns that buildings must not be constructed in waterways.
