“Every time I crossed the water, I wished I had a walking stick, because it was very slippery.”
Biography
Mawutor is a market woman whose home stood slightly above ground level but still became isolated by floodwater. Her experience reflects the struggles of families living in areas without sufficient infrastructure.
Before the flood
She lived from trading and weaving-related market activities, following a stable daily routine.
During the flood
Although water did not enter her house, it isolated her completely. She waded barefoot through slippery water every time she left home. Movement was severely restricted and many friends and neighbours lost their houses. She and her family did not receive any external support.
After the flood
Standing water remained in parts of the community for years. Livelihoods collapsed, and daily life became exhausting and uncertain.
Thought's about the future
She hopes and prays for gentle rains rather than destructive downpours and fears a recurrence of the disaster.
